Flex Notice

Willow Creek Composite High School
Flex Block

What is Flex Block?

Flex block is a 41 minute block of time, two days per week where high school students
have the opportunity to take ownership for their instructional time. The goal of Flex
Block is to give students non-class time with teachers or other school staff during the
school day. Except in cases where parents or teachers deem it necessary to direct a
student during Flex Block, students will have a choice of where to be during this time.
The time can be used for:

1. Making up missed work, tests, quizzes or other class assignments because of
absences.
2. Getting academic assistance on subject material the student may not fully
understand.
3. Studying for upcoming quizzes or exams.
4. Working on homework, class assignments or projects.
5. Teacher assigned review/study sessions.
6. Physical activity other than P.E. Class.
7. Meeting with school counsellors.
8. Outside presenters such as risk reduction presentations.
9. School assemblies or other school wide activities.
10.Taking one credit CTS modules of the students choosing.

When is Flex Block?

Flex block is Tuesdays and Thursdays from 11:27 AM - 12:08 PM.

Is Flex Block Mandatory?

Yes. Flex Block is considered instructional time. Although no mark is specifically given
for Flex Block, attendance is mandatory and will be treated as any other class.

How does Flex Block work?

WCCHS provides up to 12 different areas for students to choose to be in during Flex
Block. Students will be required to log into power school before 10:01 AM on the day of
Flex Block and select the area they wish to be in. There are maximum capacities for
each session so students should make their selections early so they are able to be in
the area they want. Parents are also able to go into power school and select a session
for their students. A parent selection will override a student’s selection. If a parent
makes a selection the student can’t change it. Teachers and school administrators are
also able to make selections for students if they want the student to attend a specific
session. A teacher’s selection will override a student or parent selection, with students
and parents unable to change a teacher’s selection. School administrators can also
make a selection for a student with no other users able to change the administrator’s
selection.

Selections can be made starting at 8:45 AM the day prior to the Flex Block. This
means, after 8:45 AM on Monday, students will be able to begin making their selection
for Tuesday Flex Block and for Thursday Flex Block students will be able to begin
making their selections after 8:45 AM on Wednesday. After 10:00 AM on the day of
Flex Block, students who have not made a selection, or have not had a selection made
for them by a parent or teacher, will be placed in a session by school administration. It
is the student’s responsibility to know what session they have been placed in. Students
will be able to look in Power School or check at the office to know where they have
been placed.
